1976년부터 7년에 걸쳐 발굴조사를 하여 담장내 면적이 288m, 남북 281m, 전체면적 2만여평으로 동양에선 최대 면적의 사찰이며, 당시 늪지를 매립하여 대지를 마련한 것이 밝혀 졌다.
After Excavation investigation about Hwang-Yong-Sa over 7 years from 1976,
It is found that Hwang-Yong-Sa is the largest Buddhist temple in Orient by 288m in the area of Wall inside,South-North 281m, Whole area about 20000 p'yongs and they arranged this area by reclaiming the ooze.
황룡사의 배치는 다른 사찰들 보다 독특하며 예전에는 황룡사 목탑터 옆에 언덕이 있어 전체적인 배치를 확인 할 수 있었으나 근래에 없어졌다.
